In Matthew 3:12, the winnowing fan was used on the threshing floor to help separate the wheat from the chaff. "Separating the wheat from the chaff" is an idiomatic expression that means distinguishing valuable or useful elements from worthless or undesirable ones. It originates from the process of winnowing, where grains of wheat are separated from the inedible chaff by tossing them into the air; the heavier wheat falls back down, while the lighter chaff is blown away by the wind. Metaphorically, it refers to the act of discerning what is valuable or important from what is not. In the bible, symbolically it means there was a separation going on with the children of God who truly belong to him and those that do not.

This fan entitled the “Promise” because the rainbow in the Bible signifies God's promise, mercy, forgiveness, hope, and renewal. After the floodwaters receded and Noah and his family, along with the animals, emerged from the ark, God made a covenant with Noah. As a sign of this covenant, God placed a rainbow in the sky, promising never again to destroy the earth with a flood.  The purpose of this fan is to be used as worship instrument to glorify our God in heaven or for spiritual warfare against the kingdom of darkness.
